Allen Tousaint is one of the original rock and rollers. He was a writer and producer for Lee Dorsey, Bennie Spellman & Patti Labelle. His songs have been covered by The Who, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello, Robert Plant, Lowell George, Phish, The Band, The Doors, The Yardbirds, Robert Plant and many more.

Toussaint was coming to Seattle to perform at Jazz Alley and we were lucky enough to get him to appear as our musical guest on Radio8Ball. We were blown away to get this rock and roll legend in cahoots with The Pop Oracle and invited some of our favorite artists to join in and ask their questions. They were, Lili Haydn, comedian Derek Sheen, Dan Bern & Mike Viola. Toussaint’s warmth and generosity of spirit, so evident in his music, was on full display as he assisted with the musical divinations and gave us a look behind the songs.

9 of Wands (Strength)

Dan Bern brings the Strength of the 9 of Wands to life with “Lake”
performed live on Radio8Ball on KAOS 89.3 FM on September 27, 2005.

Dan visited Olympia that week, hung out at a cheap hotel and wrote for several days.
At least a couple of the songs written at The Golden Gavel ended up on his “New American Language” CD
(which featured The Previous rhythm section of Colin Mahoney and Brian Schey).

We don’t know how many other times Dan performed this song but on this night in September
it burned up the studio.

Dan has been a regular contributor to Radio8Ball since it began.

Dan Bern wrote most of the best songs for the film “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story”, which starred John C. Reilly. Having them both on Radio8Ball at Theater Off Jackson is a perfect example of the kind of booking synergy we aspire to on Radio8Ball.

Comedian Derek Sheen wasn’t bad either.

And filmmakers Jake Kotze & Jim Sanders created a mind-blowing sync film, “Hey Zeus”, exploring the synchronicities in John C. Reilly’s films to introduce his arrival.
John C. Reilly’s question for The Pop Oracle was, “Do our dead relatives see us?”

The answer, “Let Me Die With My Trumpet In My Hand”, came from Dan Bern’s backing group, Common Rotation, which was not at all how we would have planned it, but it was a perfect answer nonetheless.

It was great. We filmed it and recorded it but somehow we ended up with none of it. We hope it’s all out there somewhere.
