  1. Pop Oracle song of the day January 23, 2015 is Liz Phair’s “HWC”, the 6 of Cups (PLEASURE) in our musical tarot.

I’ve got a tooth ache. Never had one of these before. Just got a clean bill of health from the dentist but my mouth tells a different story. Not much pleasure there.

It’s my little brother’s birthday. He’s partying somewhere in Europe, which would be the case whether it was his birthday or not. He’s one of the more pleasure seeking people I know, and he seems to be successful at it. Happy birthday Gabriel.

Liz Phair’s celebration of the male…um…gift on her first MILF record is one of the more subversive and controversial pop songs I know, which is why Shmushkin covers it. My brother and I are both, if you can believe it, products of our mother’s eggs and our father’s jizz, and this song was produced by Previous bass player, R. Walt Vincent, who traveled in Europe with my brother and I when I was filming “Averill’s Arrival” in Vienna.

So there’s my sync. What’s yours?

  2. The Pop Oracle song of the day for January 27, 2015.

It’s a paradoxical week of pleasure in the mercurial tempest of this week.

This song is full of paradox. First of all, if the song represents PLEASURE one might reasonably ask, “Who’s?” I’d like to think that it’s both the singer and her subject who are enjoying each other but…

Is this a song about male pleasure resulting in the explosion of the life giving force Liz Phair’s song is celebrating, or is it about LIz’s pleasure? The song is clear that this is about her pleasure and yet, if you listen to Shmushkin’s version, you might think it’s about his.

This is a testament to the strength of the song, and a kind of Rorschach test for our feelings about male sexuality. Is it a gift or a threat? Obviously that’s not really an either or question. The real question is can those who see male sexuality as a threat also see it as a gift, and can those who see it only as a gift, see how it can also be a threat?

In the context of the song, I’d say this is a conversation to be thoroughly enjoyed, with passion and humor, and maybe a harmonica solo.

  3. Yes, nice going Walt! Great song, killer song and Liz….well…HWC….Yummy all around.

  4. Question: “poo”
Answer: six of cups, pleasure. I suppose having a poo is pleasureable
