Bart Davenport
From ANDRAS JONES: I’ve been trying to get Bart Davenport back on Radio8Ball for 12 years since he was on our show on KAOS in 2005. So of course I chose to end this Radio8Ball by insulting his question. Good sport that Bart is, he took no offense. And, in fact, it’s a great question. Maybe one of the best we’ve had. Sometimes I don’t even get my own show but Bart gets to the very heart of it. Here we are recording these synchronistic moments of truth, live but intended entirely for consumption at a later date, with the goal of being more true in the future than we could ever be in the present. In the present, we are trapped the maelstrom of the moment, judging ourselves and others (as I do with this question), driven by impossible desires for perfection and insane fears of failure and embarrassment, but the tape reveals truths we were too busy to recognize. And, of course, Bart wraps it all in a kitschy little joke the deeper meaning of which could easily be missed or mistaken as “cheap words”. To remain soulful and funny and true in the moment is what we call grace. That, my friends, IS Bart Davenport.
Cheap Words
Got myself a home
And some say it’s a paradise
Stay up all night long
Drinking white Russians
Waking up with me
You’re too scared to breath
You slip out my door to the cold
In your little coat
I meant to tell you
Cheap thrills they ain’t cheap enough
I’m giving up on this crazy of life
This wasted love
Wreck the car you drive
And money buys another one
Like the songs you write
You don’t intend to keep for long
But your words don’t fail
I will eat them too
You just say one thing and mean another
While you eulogize every single lover
I run for cover
Cheap words say more than you know
I’m giving up on this crazy life
This wasted love
And everyone is so polite
They say, “You’ll find the one who’s right”
But I would hate to read their minds
Got myself a home
They say the neighborhood is nice
You can use my phone
Call yourself a cab tonight
Cheap thrills they ain’t cheap enough
I’m giving up on this crazy life
This wasted love
