David Ury

From ANDRAS JONES: DAVID URY is Champ in Lodge 49. Champ is the Jim Ignatowski of the Lodge 49 universe. Obviously damaged. Deceptively wise. Endlessly entertaining. This isn’t David’s first bite at the oracle. He was our guest back in 2015 for a live event filmed at Obsidian in Olympia around the time of the birth of David’s daughter, who is the inspiration for his question this time around. Obsidian is the setting for the song David gets as his answer. “Absolutely No Sense of Humor” is about a very large comedian from Olympia, an ex-con with machine gun tattoos on his arms, who blew up at me after a different Radio8Ball show at Obsidian. The comedian is still so angry at being referred to as a “clown” all those years ago that he recently manufactured a complaint that I was harassing him because I stood at the bar during one of his shows. It’s ludicrous of course or, as the song says “fucking hilarious” but no more so than the time David attended a Radio8Ball show we presented at a theater in Los Angeles with the K Records recording artist Mirah, which included a theater full of women booing me for covering Liz Phair’s “HWC”. I don’t know why the things I do engender such a strong response but that appears to be my karma. After the R8B show with Mirah in LA I remember David laughing and saying it reminded him of an Evergreen seminar, which is a joke you may not get if you are unfamiliar with Evergreen or seminars but hey, my dad was one of the people responsible for the Evergreen seminar format. My whole life is an Evergreen seminar!
POP ORACLE Song of The Day (August 4, 2019): RECESS MONKEY “Birthday Bite”
Absolutely No Sense of Humor
There’s a comedian in this town
who gets mad if you call him a clown
even though clown’s just a synonym for his profession
So let’s just call him Sam
the big comedian
with absolutely no sense of humor about the word clown.
Well he chased me down the street outside of Obsidian
Shouting and a threatening, man he wasn’t kidding
and if it happened to you
you’d believe that it was true
but if it happened to me
you probably think it didn’t
Well I did this guy the grave injustice
of inviting him to be on my show
It didn’t go as well as he’d hoped
and he blamed me for the whole situation
in an angry after show text
that led me to mutter under my breath,
“Aw…
I made the clown cry”
That’s why he chased me down the street outside of Obsidian
that night.
Shouting and a threatening, man he wasn’t kidding.
He was looking for a fight saying,
“You called me a clown
You called me a clown
Admit it, you called me a clown”
That’s what he shouted as he ran me down.
That’s just hilarious.
C’mon Sam.
That’s fucking hilarious, man.
That there’s a comedian in this town
who flips out if you call him a clown
He’s got absolutely no sense of humor about the word clown.
So if you see him clowning around
don’t make the mistake of calling him a clown
Even under your breath when
he’s not around
He might chase you down the street outside of Obsidian
some night.
Shouting and a threatening, man he won’t be kidding.
He’ll be looking for a fight
and when it happens to you
I’ll believe that it’s true
‘Cause it happened to me…
