From ANDRAS JONES: JOSH EATON joins us from the middle of a Missoula bike ride to engage the Pop Oracle of IZAAK OPATZ‘s music. Josh is a guy Izaak introduced to me as a “rock star” teacher from his hometown, but even (and maybe especially) rock star teachers need some time on the weekend to be a kid.
POP ORACLE Song of The Day (June 16, 2019): THE PREVIOUS “You Better Love Me” (Live at Small’s)
Duck Lake Road
I miss a road, just two tracks of gravel
that wind up the side of a hill out on the plains
I used to drive there, when I wanted to sleep under the moon
at dusk when the hill was just a clobber of black on blue
I’d scrabble off the main road, and idle at the gate
and untie the lock of rope as the music from my truck escaped
It’s flat as the deck of an aircraft carrier, when I get to the top
Nothing’s quite as quiet, as when I turn my engine off
Is it wrong I want to pull off here
Here in my memories of Duck Lake Road
Is it wrong, I think I know what I want
Already, and so close to home
One time in the evening, for the benefit of a girlfriend
I cued and conjured a coyote with my right hand
another time we woke up, surrounded by a herd of cows
rubbing the side view and licking the hood, staring at our naked selves
