BEAUTS do BEAT HAPPENING
From ROY IVY: Radio8Ball concludes its quasi Beat Happening reunion in this episode, where we’re joined by BH alum and Sandman chum Bret Lunsford. Man, that Sandman has a lot of great friends. Calling in from Fidalgo Island, Bret waxes nostalgic about his memories with Sandman, who I hear is a likeable guy. In addition to sharing Croation blood, Bret tells of meeting our Sandman in 1997 at an Anacortes bookstore, and reveals that Sandman “really knows how to party,” which implies “bookstore coke orgy.” We also hear from Bret’s sweetie, Denise, who became a BH alum when she leaned drums on the fly while filling in for Heather on a tour, and we discover the fun fact that Beat Happening, Beatles, and Beauts would all be on the same record shelf.
I remember working in a record store in the early ‘90s and giving up trying to alphabetize all the bands with “Super” in their name. It super sucked.
Bret approaches the Pop Oracle with a whammy: “Is soft power harder than hard power?” It’s open to plenty of interpretations, from international relations to the erotic, and the Pop Oracle answers a Beat Happening member with a song that isn’t Beat Happening for the second spin in a row. It’s Calvin’s “What Was Me,” beautifully delivered by Beauts’ beautiful Bente in an encapsulation of “soft power.” It was everybody’s favorite song at the most recent Beautes show, easily. Bret digs it, and so will you.
POP ORACLE Song of The Day (April 17, 2019): JAMES WILLIAM HINDLE “Early Days”
WHAT WAS ME
When I die, there will be a song
And everyone will sing-a-long
And that will be me
That will be me
When I’m done, you’ll find an (?)
Believed in every heart and known in every head
And that will be me
That will be me
That will be me
When I’m over, there will be a story sung
By every lambchop lost, the old and the young
And that will, that will, that will, that will
That will be me
That will be me
That will be me
When I’m gone there will be a rhyme
Played by everyone in their lifetime
And that will be me
That will be me
That will be me, that will be
That will be me
When I’m through, you’ll recall a humble tune
It makes sense to hum when flowers start to bloom
And that will be, that will
That will, that
That will be me
That will be me
That will be me
When I’m dead there will be a saga told
That gathers all the black sheep back into the fold
And that will be me
That will be me
Way across the sky, will roll a ballad thunder
Coughing with new meco (?) when I’m six feet under
And that will be me
That will be me
That will be me
That will be me
That will be me
That will be me
That will be me
