From ANDRAS JONES: MIKE RANDLE of Baby Lemonade and LOVE joins our Pop Oracle session with BRITTA PHILLIPS to reminisce about the season we spent hanging in LA. I was impressed with Mike’s playing and his down to earth vibe. He somehow remembered a song called “Nathan Went West” I wrote about Nathanael West, the author of The Day of The Locust, for a project I was working on at the time with Lisa Jenio of the band Candypants. The project was called Smartypants and the idea was a series of songs about great writers who came to Hollywood and got lost in one way or another. Many years have passed since then but the music is still ringing in our ears. Appropriately, Mike’s question is drawn from the well of song and gets a very groovy answer from Britta and her accompanist MARSHALL THOMPSON.
LUCK OR MAGIC
by Britta Phillips
I guess I wasn’t thinking / of where it all was going
I just let myself imagine /something good was gonna happen
There is no other feeling / like the one in the beginning
I can’t keep myself from falling / and I don’t wanna listen
But I don’t want your mercy / know you can’t help but hurt me
But I want my heart to get dirty / so turn around if you heard me
I betcha think that I’m not willing / yeah you believe I’m only fooling
But I got secrets I’m not telling /and I don’t need you to know nothin’
Its easy to imagine / and it feels like it could happen
I know I will have it / by luck or by magic
So I don’t want your mercy / no you can’t help but hurt me
I want my heart to get dirty / so turn around if you heard me
I can’t believe I ever met you / and when you leave I’m gonna let you
Cos if I grieve what good would that do / I know I’ll need to forget you
So I don’t want your mercy / know you can’t help but hurt me
I want my heart to get dirty / so turn around if you heard me
