Probyn Gregory
&
Chris “Sandman” Sand
From ANDRAS JONES: The great multi-instrumentalist PROBYN GREGORY joins us for a Pop Oracle session that is one of the best we’ve done. The guy plays synchronicity just as well as he plays any other instrument. Not only do we get some intimate insights into the coming together of The Wondermints with Brian Wilson, we also get into a discussion about dragons. What do dragons and the foundations of California pop have in common? Well, you’ll have to listen to find out but I promise you, “It’s no drag”.
Probyn’s answer, randomly chosen by the R8B App, is from one of our favorites, CHRIS “SANDMAN” SAND. At first Probyn thinks the song was written by Johnny Cash, then I correct him and tell him it’s actually a Woody Guthrie song. Further research proves us both wrong as Wikipedia tells us the song is an old traditional number originally collected by Frank Lee Drennen’s hero, Carl Sandburg, in 1927 for his “American Songbag”.
I Ride An Old Paint
traditional
I ride an old Paint, I’m leadin’ old Dan
I’m goin’ to Montana just to throw the houlihan
They feed in the coulees, they water in the draw
Their tails are all matted, their backs are all raw
Ride around, little dogies, ride around them slow
For they’re fiery and snuffy and rarin’ to go
Old Bill Jones had two daughters and a song
One went to Denver, the other went wrong
His wife, she died in a poolroom fight
But still he keeps singing from morning to night
Ride around, little dogies, ride around them slow
For they’re fiery and snuffy and rarin’ to go
When I die, take my saddle from the wall
And put it on my pony and lead him from his stall
Tie my bones to his back, turn our faces to the west
And we’ll ride the prairies that we love the best
