From ANDRAS JONES: I first met Eleni Mandell at Highland Grounds in Hollywood where my band Mr. Jones & The Previous had some of our most epic early shows circa 1990. You know that face that stares out of her early album covers? That was no act. I don’t care how many people we got to come out to a gig, or who was in the audience, or how hard we rocked. I could feel like the second coming of Bruce Springsteen onstage but Eleni always intimidated the hell out of me from behind the bar. That was the intensity she brought to slinging java, before I knew she could sing or write or play the way she does. In fact, learning Eleni had such a soulful voice and musical vibe actually made her more approachable. More human. Her CD “Wishbone” is still one of my favorites and I’m pretty jazzed that this podcast is coming out the day before we are recording her episode of Radio8Ball on 12/14/17. I can’t help but feel that this alignment is fortuitous. It certainly wasn’t planned.
Genius
Everybody wants to be a genius.
You’re not the only one
With all things that you might do
Which one of them will you get to?
Tomorrow when you wake up
Then you’ll show them.
Nobody wants to break your heart
You do it on your own.
There’s nothing wrong with you today
Nothing you had that they took away
But all the time you’ve waited
For what is owed to you
You want to fight, they fight you blue
You want to lie, who will lie with you.
You’re the only one, waiting for a sign.
So you’re the only one
So you’re the only one
Everyone’s had some situation
Keep it to yourself
There’s no need to answer questions
Your lies have spoiled two confessions
And all the time you waited
Won’t come back to you
You want to fight, they fight you blue
You want to lie, who will lie with you.
You’re the only one, waiting for a sign.
So you’re the only one
So you’re the only one
Everybody wants to be a genius
