Tom Petty Tribute
For Mike Campbell
with Paul Zollo
&
Andras Jones
From ANDRAS JONES: In our musical divination for Heartbreaker’s guitarist (and co-songwriter) Mike Campbell we got a track from the band’s first record. One of my favorites. Of course I kinda muffed the lyrics, missing the all important “I’m” in favor a of a repetition of “I’ve been” in reference to the protagonist in the song’s state of foolishness. Learning three new Tom Petty songs for this show may have been taking on a bit much, and I would have been glad to relinquish the role of lead singer if we’d had a greater response from artists who wanted to do the show. That said, singing several of Tom’s songs made me more keenly aware of the brilliance and grace of his phrasing and the character he created in song. It’s a nice device to repeat yourself in. As for Mike Campbell, in keeping with his silent man with a big stick mystique we’ll let the music do the talking.
FOOLED AGAIN (I Don’t Like It)
Strange voice on the telephone
Tellin’ me I better leave you ‘lone
Why won’t somebody say what’s goin’ on
Oh, oh, I think I’ve been through this before
Looks like I’ve been fooled again
Looks like I’m the fool again
I don’t like it, I don’t like it
You never said you had no number two
I need to know ’bout it if you do
If two is one, I might as well be three
It’s good to see you think so much of me
Looks like I’ve been fooled again
Looks like I’m the fool again
I don’t like it, I don’t like it
You never said you had no longer to
I need to know ’bout it if you do
If two is one, I might as well be three
It’s good to see you think so much of me
Looks like I’ve been fooled again
Looks like I’m the fool again
I don’t like it, I don’t like it
