“The Throng of Blowtown”
was Written and Performed by Mary Lou Lord
with Jon Brion performing on the track
Here,
she scares up the 9 of Disks,
and the concept of Gain.
Mary Lou Lord,
who released records for both Kill Rock Stars and WORK Records,
made her name transforming street corners
into concert halls where the money rains.
Mary Lou and Andras have shared a few street corners and stages
over the years.

Later this afternoon I’ll be recording the next R8B podcast with Jimmy Webb, Lisa Jenio, Chris Sand, & Julie Christensen. This song totally puts me in the mood.
Today’s Pop Oracle song of the day comes from Mary Lou Lord who I met in Olympia but hales from Salem, Massachusetts. She’s joined on this track by my favorite musician, Jon Brion, who also has Boston roots. Sorry Seahawk fans. Boston rules the day.
Luckily music isn’t a provincial pissing contest. It’s totally possible to love musicians from Boston and from Olympia. This song contains some of the qualities I really miss in northwest music. Melody. Harmony. Humor. A sense of history. A sense of ease. On the other hand, Mary Lou and Jon Brion got to that place that John Lennon talked about in “Come Together” – “got to be good lookin’ cause he’s so hard to see” that even moderate major label success seems to engender in most who are embraced by it.
I dream of a music scene with the independent spirit of Olympia and the commitment to excellence of Boston. And don’t tell me it’s in Portland. Like the character in the song, the land of my dreams exists in loving memories of what might have been.
