From ANDRAS JONES: I entered the basement rehearsal space of Future Teens in Watertown, MA as an interested interloper and emerged (as I hope you have) a full-fledged fan of this band. The songs and the musicianship are great and there’s something else. What I think we captured in our conversation is their incredibly healthy band dynamic. The competition and snark that animates the interactions of so many of the bands we’ve had on the show is simply absent with these cats. As we learned, Daniel Radin is the only original member of the band and, as the chief songwriter and band liaison, who also mixed these tracks, you could call him the band’s leader but if you hang out with them that’s not the way it feels. Singer-guitarist Amy Hoffman could be described as a show stealer with her charismatic and deeply emotional vocal performances but there is no theft here, just an elevation of the whole enterprise that it takes a very confident band “leader” to foster and celebrate. I’m not clear about when Maya Mortman and Colby Blauvelt joined the band but it feels to me like these four have been playing together as a unit for a lot longer than is likely. Maybe this is just the honeymoon period but I doubt it. I foresee a bright future filled with lots of healthy tears, great communication and songs that turn hard feelings into triumphant anthems of humanity.
