Mormon & The Meth Head
(Part 1):
Jessa Reed
with
Andras Jones &
The music of Peter David Connelly
From ANDRAS JONES: This might be my most ambitious Radio8Ball yet. For one thing, I learned 7 new songs just for it. The songs are by songwriters who have been featured on Radio8Ball in the past. ANYA MARINA, BART DAVENPORT, COLLEEN GREEN, JOSH CLAYTON-FELT, MARY LOU LORD, PETER DAVID CONNELLY & VIVIAN COOK. These songs are the oracle fodder for this episode’s readings. And to ask the questions? I’ve gathered the hosts of some of my favorite podcasts. JESSA REED & AARON WOODALL of the MORMON & THE METH HEAD podcast, ANNA HOSSNIEH & SHEREEN LANI YOUNES of the ETHNICALLY AMBIGUOUS podcast, and JOHN FAHY, AARON PITA and MATT BROUSSEAU of the PROFILES IN ECCENTRICITY podcast.
WARNING: These sessions went looooooong so buckle in and get ready to go down a whole bunch of rabbit holes.
We start with the hosts of MORMON & THE METH HEAD and a question from Jessa Reed. My buddy Chris Kirk from Olympia turned me on to these two comedians and their podcast about a year ago and, having little interest in methamphetamine or Mormonism, I was initially uninspired but when I heard they had joined the Starburns universe I was intrigued at the synchronicity so I started listening. It was winter. Things were dark, inside and out, and I kinda got obsessed. I binged for a month or so as I followed their adventures and heartbreaks, finding parallels in my own life, and enjoying their dynamic. When I was pulling this episode together inviting Jessa & Aaron was obvious to me, and I guess it was to them too because they were an immediate and enthusiastic yes.
After I’m through gushing about their pod we get down to Jessa’s question. I guess it’s kinda out there (to some) while also being very in here (for others). It’s a big swing kind of question and I think she got a tremendous answer. It’s certainly a song I love to sing and wallow in. And it’s from Olympia, where she’ll be doing some comedy at Rhythm & Rye on May 5th.
POP ORACLE Song of The Day (April 23, 2019): DINO STAMATOPOULOS “Needles”
Are We Breaking Up Tonight?
by Peter David Connelly
Walking through your open door
It isn’t home to me anymore
You’ve got a look that needs explaining
I’m shaken and I’m sure it shows
but it’s only cause I’ve gotta know
Are you through with me now baby?
Are we breaking up tonight?
Are you really gonna end my life tonight?
See me howl in pain and say,
“Darling it’s all right.”
Are you gonna leave me in defeat
to take a loser’s walk down lonely street?
To the city dock where the broken hearted meet
I don’t think they ever eat
I thought that we could have a beer
and stay together for another year
but you don’t seem to feel like waiting.
Nothing new to do or say
but I’ll do everything to make you stay
even hyperventilating
And love is a road of faith
how it can tear you up in anger
She’s watching my decline
from the position of a stranger
Remember when I used to call
now we don’t even talk at all
Are we breaking up tonight?
Are you really gonna end my life tonight?
As you calmly say,
“Would you kindly leave my sight.”
Don’t even try to take my hand
And say, “Baby doll I understand.”
Sometimes love just lives to be set free
And I think we’re history
I think we’re history
