Caroline Keys
From ANDRAS JONES: In January of this year I decided to visit my friend CHRIS SAND in Missoula, Montana where he plies his craft as a songwriter, raises his daughter, and works at a local theater called The Roxy. Over the course of three outwardly cold but inwardly snuggly warm sessions I got a full on initiation into the soul of my friend’s town. The first of these sessions at Black National Studio in the heart of town, features singer/songwriter CAROLINE KEYS and her pedal steel playing sidekick GIBSON HARTWELL, who will be with is for the next 8 days of daily musical divinations. Caroline’s songs are going to sneak up on you. At first you might think, well, I’ve heard stuff like this before but then you’ll notice some very clever wordplay and the virtuoso pedal steeling from Hartwell and before you know it, what seemed like a familiar trail has led you into some kind of enchanted meadow that isn’t on any maps.
Today’s randomly chosen Pop Oracle song from the R8B app is one I wrote for a project Willie Wisely was organizing back in 2007-ish pitching songs to football teams for their ad campaigns. This is one I wrote for The Green Bay Packers. Jon Auer produced the songs and plays all the instruments. It’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever recorded and it’s comedic nature fits right in with this laugh-filled episode with Caroline and Gibson and their friends.
POP ORACLE Song of The Day (March 30, 2019): ANDRAS JONES (with Jon Auer) “Tailgate Party”
Two Story House
It was a two story house
his and hers
behind closed doors no one knows what occurs
you’ve got “he said this”
“yeah, well she said that”
it’s hard to tell in a two story house
Not too long a go when they weren’t so old
he carried his bride across the threshold
now that same front door
it slams so hard
and he’s picking plates up out of the yard
And here in the kitchen where he goosed her by the sink
she stares out the window and she starts to think
“how did I get here?” and
“I want out”
of this god-forsaken two story house
But he’s down in the basement building her dream
it was a Graceland birdhouse she saw in a magazine
when he saws and hammers, all she hears in noise
“he ain’t got time for me, he just messes with his toys…”
It was a two story house
his and hers
he shows her the birdhouse and she starts to purr
“let’s go upstairs and shut the bedroom door”
and pretty soon it was a three story house
