From ANDRAS JONES: It was unavoidable, considering the trajectory the Feral version of Radio8Ball has taken, that I would eventually aim the eye of The Pop Oracle toward Olympia where this format was born. I grew up on the Evergreen campus listening to my father, his students, and his colleagues discuss the poetry of dreams. When he died, my unconscious recollections of these times led to the creation and development of Radio8Ball at the campus station, KAOS, where I hosted the show for 10 years. These years and all the musical divinations we did (most of them recorded) form the historical underpinnings of the show you are following now. This includes a tale of harassment and corruption at the station that is still an issue to this day. I didn’t plan to dump all of this on singer-songwriter VIVIAN COOK. It just kind of worked out that way. I love her music but before this I didn’t really know her at all. Take that into consideration when listening to how gracefully she navigates the uncomfortable position she finds herself in as I use her episode to unpack institutional bullying and put forth a strategy for addressing it. It’s called RECOGNIZE, DE-ESCALATE & DE-CODE.
HARVEST MOON
Well gray whale cove’s on fire
Yeah it’s Friday night
And everything’s
Gonna be alright
If I can stop thinking bout
Overpopulation
And what I’m gonna do
When all my favorite places
Turn to piles of trash
Oh but it’s kind of nice
And so primitive
Everybody bearing witness
To the harvest moon
Have you heard her sing?
She’s down for anything
Yeah she’s the harvest moon
Here to make sure we’re all in tune
Yeah I’ve been Colorado dreaming
But I’m not sure I could cut it
Oh the Rockies sounds real nice
But California’s got me in a vice
Yeah you must get her echo in the mountain air
But you’d never believe
How loud that bitch can sing
Till you hear the pacific howling
To the harvest moon
Have you heard her sing?
Then why are you asking anything
Yeah she’s the harvest moon
Here to make sure we’re all in tune
We’re all in tune
